A passenger van hit the side of a tanker truck in Hyde Park on Monday morning, causing a small fuel spill and sending both the driver and passenger of the van to the hospital. The crash occurred at 1171 Hyde Park Ave. (Boston Fire Department).

Officials in Boston rushed to clean up a small gasoline spill early Monday after a van crashed into the side of a tanker truck at a roadside gas station before dawn.

About 50 to 60 gallons of fuel spilled onto the street — far less than the 11,500 gallons the truck had just delivered to the Akiki gas station at 1171 Hyde Park Ave., according to the Boston Fire Department.

Both the van driver and a passenger were brought to the hospital after the collision, the fire department said.

The crash and fuel spill around 3:30 a.m. led first responders to cover storm drains in the area to prevent gasoline from leaking into the sewage system. Officials also used absorbents to soak the liquid up from the pavement.

Two hours after the collision, HAZMAT workers remained at the scene supervising the cleanup. Employees of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission had arrived to check whether fuel had entered the storm drains, fire officials said.
