BEAVER DAM, Ky. — A Boil Water Advisory has been issued for Ohio County Water District customers served by the Windy Hill water tank along KY 2713 near KY 505 S.

According to OVWD General Manager Eric Hickman, the water leak began around 9 p.m. Friday night and was found and isolated around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Repairs are underway and should be completed by noon today. The crews are repairing an 18″ main line out of the Windy Hill water tank along Highway 2713 near State Route 505 South.

The moderate drought conditions our area is experiencing is causing the ground to shift and underground pipes do not do well under movement causing shear stresses and pipe failures. The OCWD has an expansive system with over 650 miles of lines and is the 5th largest water district in the state. Breaks are going to occur in conditions we are currently facing.

Due to the size of the affected area, it is not feasible for OCWD crews to visit all of the customers affected by the water leak door-to-door placing doorknob hangers, especially during the early morning hours for safety precautions.

A boil water advisory has been issued out of precaution for all customers served by the Windy Hill Tank, which is around 1,780 customers.

The Boil Water Advisory is for OCWD customers in these areas, Baizetown, Select, Manda, Arnold, Mt. Pleasant, Windy Hill, White Run, Rosine Horse Branch, Flint Springs, Renfrow, Dogwalk, Neafus, Dan, Sunnydale, Sulphur Springs, Dundee, Narrows, Magan, Olaton, Davidson, Hites Falls, Shreve, Askins, Vanzant and Falls of Rough.

If your home or business experienced a drop in water pressure as a result of this issue, you will be included in this boil water advisory.

When the OCWD experiences pressure drops below 20 psi, its system becomes vulnerable to bacteria from groundwater or dirt seeping into the pipe and affecting the water supply. This is the reason a Boil Water Advisory is issued, in the event of a water main break.

As a precautionary measure, all water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil for three minutes. This advisory has been issued out of an abundance of caution and affected customers will be notified when it is lifted.
